Department of Water Affairs is the owner of the dam who has appointed Umgeni Water as the water utility company responsible for providing water to the local authorities in KZN.  Msinsi Holdings (Pty) Ltd is the appointed management agency by Umgeni Water to manage the biodiversity and recreation facilities in Albert Falls and Bon Accorde Park and other dams managed by Umgeni Water.  From 1976 until 1996 Natal Parks Board was managing the dam, from 1996 until current the dam is managed by Msinsi Holdings.  Msinsi manages within the purchase line of the dam and by law, we enforce the 100m no-wake zone along the shoreline.

The area around the Msinsi Albert Falls Dam is filled with secluded nature trails and picnic spots, it also offers wonderful game viewing, boating, fishing and hiking opportunities.  One of the largest dams in KwaZulu Natal, Albert Falls Dam is a popular playground for sailors, canoeists and hikers.  The dam is rated one of the best bass fishing dam in the world and an international bass fishing competition is held there annually.

Below Midmar Dam, the uMngeni plunges over the 111m high Howick Falls and into the uMngeni Valley where remnants of Midland forest can be seen. The Karkloof tributary then joins before the uMngeni flows into Albert Falls Dam. Approaching Albert Falls, the uMngeni meanders through grassed farmland, where the riverbanks are treeless or invaded by woody alien plants. Below the falls, the river traverses deeply dissected terrain, which forms the western edge of the Valley of a Thousand Hills.
